Frequently Asked Questions

Which range of CPL should I buy?

Let the quality of your lens guide your choice. Or simply go for the best – our professional Plus+ range.

Urth has two different ranges of filters: Urth (our premium range) and Urth Plus+ (our professional range). Let the quality of your lens guide your decision. If you’ve invested in a professional-quality lens, we recommend you match its quality with our Plus+ range. Our Urth range is the perfect option for all other standards of lens.

How do I get the most out of my CPL?

Use the 90-degree rule, then back it off a bit.

To achieve the strongest polarization possible, the reflected light source needs to be at 90-degrees to your CPL. To check this, make an L-shape using your thumb and index finger. Point your thumb at the lens and wherever your index finger is pointed, that is the angle that will achieve maximum polarisation. Sometimes at full polarization, the effect can look unrealistic so we suggest you back it off a bit for a slightly softer polarization.

Can I use your CPL with wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Yes, we recommend our Plus+ range for telephoto lenses.

Make sure you have the right size filter and you’re all set. All our filters are designed with a super slim rim to minimise any vignetting that can occur with wide-angle lenses. Because of the amount of glass in a telephoto lens, Our Plus+ range will provide the best image quality.

What's the difference between circular and linear polarzing filters?

A circular polarizer blocks reflected light from any angle while a linear polarizer only blocks reflected light from one direction.

A CPL offers more versatility and works better with digital cameras. Both linear and circular polarizers look the same, and they both do the same thing – reduce reflections on non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass and wet surfaces, and they increase colour saturation too. A CPL filter is essentially a linear polariser with an extra glass element that allows you to adjust your lens filter to block polarised light from different directions.

Does a CPL affect my exposure?

Yes but only a little – 1.33 f-stops.

A CPL filter will reduce the amount of light reaching your sensor by about 2 f-stops.

"This is my favourite lens filter ever. Screw this on your lens and magically conjure golden hour any time of day. Cutting 6 stops AND polarized light completely tames the light even in the middle of the day." Glenn bought our CPL + ND64 Plus+.

Control the Chaos, Capture the Light

As a photographer who works in constantly changing environments — from harsh desert light to unpredictable coastal skies — I’m always searching for tools that offer me greater control over light. The URTH ND64 + CPL Polarizing Filter Plus+ has quickly become one of my favorite pieces of gear because it does exactly that. It lets me shape light, reduce glare, and slow time — all in one beautifully crafted filter.

Let’s begin with what this filter actually is. It combines two essential tools in one: an ND64 neutral density filter and a circular polarizer (CPL). The ND64 component gives you a solid 6 stops of light reduction, which is perfect for long exposure shots in daylight — think silky water, blurred motion, or shallow depth of field in bright conditions. The CPL cuts reflections and enhances contrast, especially in skies, water, and glass. Together, they give you complete creative control without needing to stack filters or carry multiple accessories.

From the moment I unpacked it, I could tell this was a premium product. The build quality is solid — aerospace-grade aluminum, smooth threading, and an ultra-thin frame to prevent vignetting, even on wide-angle lenses. The glass itself is high-quality German optics with nano-coatings that resist fingerprints, water, and dust. That’s not marketing fluff — I’ve used this filter in coastal environments with sea spray and dust, and it wipes clean without smearing or scratching.

In practice, this filter delivers results. I…
