DESCRIPTION

By blocking 3 f-stops of light from half your image, you can balance your exposure when the foreground is darker than the background – such as shooting landscapes in the mountains. The hard graduation creates a natural blending of light.

Our Plus+ range features 20 layers of nano-coating providing easier cleaning and better protection against water, oil, and scratches. These layers also provide a higher maximum light transmission and a more consistent transmission curve for truer light reduction.

For best results, use our Hard Graduated ND8 Plus+ with lenses of focal lengths 35mm and above. For ultra-wide angle lenses, we recommend our Soft Graduated ND8 Filter Plus+ because it provides a more natural blending of light.

How to Use

Hard Graduated ND8 Filter Plus+

1/3

Find your filter size
Inquisitively search lens for diameter symbol. Ø often marks the spot. The diameter you seek may be accompanied by a number – Ø58 or Ø58mm. Look to the side and the front – this precious number is your filter size. Be warned: your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.

2/3

Place flat and screw clockwise
Lovingly behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten that which goes on must one day come off.

3/3

Align your horizon
Rotate your Hard Graduated ND8 Plus+ so the graduated half of the filter cover the brighter half of your scene. This will help you balance the light in your image so you can better expose the highlights and lowlights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why buy a Graduated ND Filter?

To perfectly balance exposure in your landscape photographs.

Graduated Neutral Density Filters have an ND coating on one half of the filter so that light is diminished across half your frame. This is so you can balance your exposure when there is a strong source of light coming from one side – like when you’re shooting in the forest, in the mountains or at sunset and sunrise. A Graduated ND Filter helps you balance the highlights and lowlights for more balanced exposure.

Who should buy a Graduated ND Filter?

Landscape photographers and anyone wanting more detail in their landscape highlights and lowlights.

Graduated Neutral Density filters filter out light across a portion of the frame allowing you to better balance your exposure and capture more detail in the highlights and lowlights. Graduated and Reverse Graduated ND filters block light across half the frame – perfect for when the background is bright and foreground is light or vice versa. A Centre Graduated ND filter is made for sunsets and sunrise or when there is a bright light at the centre of the frame. Graduated ND filters will help you better balance your exposure when capturing landscapes.

What does a Graduated ND Filter do?

A Graduated ND filters out a set amount of light from a portion of the frame.

Graduated Neutral Density filters filter out light across a portion of the frame allowing you to better balance your exposure and capture more detail in the highlights and lowlights. For example a Graduated ND8 blocks 3 f-stops of light across half your frame – perfect for when the background is bright and foreground is light or vice versa.

What does a Reverse Graduated ND Filter do?

A Reverse Graduated ND Filter helps you balance sunrise and sunset landscape photographs.

A Reverse Graduated ND Filter starts with the darkening in the centre of the frame and it fades across the top half of the frame to cut brighter light at the horizon while still capturing the details of the sky for balanced exposure when shooting sunrises and sunsets. By effectively darkening the horizon line across your frame, it allows you to capture greater detail in the highlights near the horizon and in the lowlights in the top and bottom of your landscape images.

What does a Centre Graduated ND Filter do?

A Centre Graduated ND Filter helps you balance sunrise and sunset landscape photographs.

A Centre Graduated ND Filter has a narrow band of darkening across the centre of the frame for balanced exposure when shooting sunrises and sunsets. By effectively darkening the horizon line across your frame, it allows you to capture greater detail in the highlights and lowlights of your landscape images when the light source is close to the horizon.

Took this on a trip into the mountains and I was blown away. Stops the sky overexposing or the darker foreground being underexposed. Fay bought our Hard Grad ND8 Plus.

Fantastic filter option for landscapes

This is a good option if you want to travel with smaller gear, instead of going with square filters.
