DESCRIPTION

By blocking 1 to 8.66 f-stops, you can use wider apertures in variable light for shallower depth of field effects, and slower shutter speeds for long exposure effects without overexposing your images.

Cinematographers can use our ND2–400 Variable ND Filter to create more cinematic effects in low and bright light.

For wide-angle lenses, we recommend our Variable ND2-32, ND8-128, ND64-1000 or fixed ND filters.

How to Use

Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

1/5

Find your filter size
Inquisitively search lens for diameter symbol. Ø often marks the spot. The diameter you seek may be accompanied by a number – Ø58 or Ø58mm. Look to the side and the front – this precious number is your filter size. Be warned: your lens focal length (e.g. 18-55mm) is not your filter size.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

2/5

Place flat and screw clockwise
Excitedly behold lens in one hand and place flat on lens. Gently screw clockwise until just firm. Do not over-tighten – that which goes on must one day come off.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

3/5

Slow your shutter
The 1 to 8.66 f-stop darkening of your images allows you to slow your shutter speed for motion blur effects.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

4/5

Open your aperture
Or, you can adjust for the darkening by opening up your aperture, which creates a shallower depth of field. You can also combine both exposure setting adjustments.
Variable ND2-400 (1-8.65 Stop) Filter

5/5

Get more cinematic
Use our ND2–400 to create more cinematic effects when filming. By blocking 1 to 8.66 f-stops of light, you can open your aperture for a shallower depth of field, creating stunning cinematic effects in different and changing light conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Variable ND Filter should I buy?

It depends on the conditions you’ll be shooting in and the effects you want to achieve.

Our Variable ND2-32 is made for low-light, our Variable ND2-400 and ND8-128 are for low-light and bright light, and our ND64-1000 is specifically for harsh bright light and long exposure.

Should I buy a fixed or variable ND filter?

It depends on how, where and what you’ll be shooting.

Fixed ND filters block a fixed f-stop of light from entering your camera. Variable ND filters provide more flexibility and have a range of f-stops you can block by rotating the outer element. If you’re starting out with ND filters, we recommend a Variable ND so you have more flexibility while you’re learning how to shoot with an ND. If the light is likely to change often, a Variable ND saves you changing between fixed NDs each time.

Do Urth ND filters have a colour cast?

No, they have great colour neutrality.

There are a couple of reasons your images may show a slight colour cast when using an ND filter. Check your white balance settings. By restricting the light entering your camera, it may throw out your white balance settings. Manually adjust your white balance settings to reduce any colour cast.

What’s the best Variable ND filter for wide-angle and telephoto lenses?

Our whole range of Fixed ND Filters work with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Our ND filters have ultra-slim rims to avoid any vignetting issues. Our Fixed ND Filters are all in our professional Plus+ range and use the world’s best glass, making them perfect for wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

Do I need to step-up my lens cap for Urth Variable ND Filters?

No, our Variable ND Filters take the same size lens cap.

If your lens takes a 67mm Urth Variable ND Filter, your 67mm lens cap will fit perfectly. Some variable ND filters require you to step-up a size, but not Urth.

“Great for video and stills. Probably the most useful tool in my camera bag.” – Jo bought our ND2-400.

Excellent Variable ND

Excellent variable ND. Glass is super clear, rotation is super smooth, and no vignetting of any kind. Been using it lately on a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 with a step up ring (bought 77mm to fit other lenses too). Superb!

95mm VND - insane value for money

My 95mm VND arrived for my Canon RF 28-70. I've bought Gobe filters before and been relatively happy for the price, but now that they go by 'Urth', there's been some real nice upgrades at the same price. The 1-8.65 stops is crazy because it basically packs two PolarPro Peter Mckinnon VND's into one filter for a fraction of the price.

The image quality is not effected at all by the filter, and so far I haven't noticed any visible colour casting or patterns. The filter turns very smoothly with nice resistance, making it hard to accidentally nudge.

Lastly, it has HARD STOPS. This is crazy considering hardly any of the more expensive brands have this. Seriously my new go to filter company now.

Best ND filters on the market

I found out about Urth when they were originally Gobe and purchased some ND filters then, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the products back then. Since they have changed over to Urth, and I have now made another purchase, I was not only surprised by the incredible NEXT DAY DELIVERY (as in, I ordered at like 4/5pm and they were delivered the very next morning!), but after testing them out on my lenses, I discovered they've upped their game by adding hard stops to their ND filters! Which is absolute bliss to have on such a great product for such a decent value for money.

If you're in the market for ND filters and debating buying from these guys, not only will you be happy with the products you buy, but you will also be helping their action against deforestation by planting trees after every order, and you get a unique code in the box to plant 5 more trees after you open the packaging.

Brilliant products, brilliant cause, brilliant company, 100% 5*'s!

Amazing value

Was shocked when I received my order the next day and even more shocked when I felt the quality of the ND filter given how much I paid. Already recommended it to some friends and will definitely be picking up some more for my other lenses. Here's to planting more trees.
