Match the diameter (e.g. Ø49mm) on your lens to the filter size. This is different to focal length.

Align the filter with the lens and thread by rotating clockwise. Avoid overtightening.

The ND's filters for me are so necessary for both in the harsh sun especially when it comes to the whitewater of the surf when shooting from a boat or jet-ski and when needing more depth of field in those quick vox pop interviews. My lenses are not complete without them.
Picked up the Urth Variable ND2-32 Filter Pro a few weeks ago and honestly really impressed so far. Build quality feels premium, smooth rotation with no weird stiffness, and the image stays sharp with very minimal color shift. Been using it mainly for video and long exposure shots — makes controlling shutter speed super easy without carrying multiple filters. Great value for the price and feels solid in the field.
